Dakota Miracle and Dakota Legend by Deja vu Impressions - Acrylic

Dakota Miracle is just as the name implies. This beautiful, big, albino bull calf is just that, nothing less than a “Miracle.” Dakota Miracle is not only a phenomenon that there is really no explanation for, but this “Miracle” could never be calculated to know the odds of one albino bison born from another albino bison. Miracle’s mother is White Cloud. He is her fifth calf, and her only albino offspring. He was born at the National Buffalo Museum, Jamestown, ND, on August 31, 2007.

What makes a white bison so unique is the fact that like his mom, White Cloud, he is a true albino bison and pure bison, having been DNA tested for both albino genes as well as cattle genes. It is an understatement to say that this is rare animal legendary. A white bison is considered to be sacred creatures by many Native American people, giving this magnificent animal a stature of symbolizing peace, unity and hope. Still, to others, the white bison symbolizes great changes in the world.

The reason for DNA testing of any bison is to see if it carries cattle genes. However, like his mom and his sire, he is not only a true albino bison, but he is also a pure bison. The pure bison herds became almost extinct with the introduction of crossing cattle and bison species to produce the beefalo in the 1970s. Beefalo actually had its official debut in a Time Magazine Article entitled, “Have a Slice of Roast Beefalo” published in July, 1973. The popularity of beefalo has had its ups and downs through the 1990s through various issues, but continues to maintain a very high quality, lean beef. Concerned bison breeders are carefully breeding to restore pure bison herds through DNA testing.
